CROWNS

In dentistry, a crown most commonly refers to a dental cap, a type of dental restoration that completely caps or encircles a tooth.   Crowns can be recommended for various reasons.  When the tooth structure becomes compromised to the point a standard filling cannot restore the tooth to the proper function we will recommend a crown.  This can be caused by a broken or decayed tooth.  A tooth that has a large filling that is breaking down can also be a good candidate for a crown.  Another reason a crown can be recommended is to cover a tooth that has had a root canal.  These teeth become brittle and are likely to break, so a crown can help prevent that.  Still another application for a crown can be to replace a missing tooth when done in tandem with a dental implant.  Crowns are a long term solution for teeth that have been compromised.  Crowns can be made of porcelain, porcelain and metal combination, or full metal (gold).

In our office, the majority of our crowns are done in one appointment.  We have the technology to be able to construct the final crown in office and cement the permanent crown the same day.  This is very advantageous for the health of the tooth and gingiva.  It is also very convenient for our patients busy schedules!
